Task Description
Install an oil catch can in the crankcase ventilation system to prevent oil vapor from entering the intake system. This modification helps keep the intake clean and reduces oil consumption.
Parts Required
- Oil catch can (baffled type preferred)
- Rubber hose (oil resistant)
- Hose clamps
- Mounting bracket
- Hose fittings (various sizes)
- Drain valve (optional)
- Thread sealant
Tools Needed
- Drill and bits
- Wrenches
- Hose cutter
- Screwdriver
- Mounting hardware
- Thread taps (if needed)
Procedure
- Identify crankcase breather location
- Determine optimal catch can location:
- Higher than crankcase outlet
- Away from heat sources
- Accessible for emptying
- Fabricate or install mounting bracket
- Mount catch can securely
- Remove existing breather hose
- Install new hose from crankcase to catch can inlet
- Install hose from catch can outlet to air filter or atmosphere
- Use proper fittings and clamps at all connections
- Ensure hoses have gradual bends (no kinks)
- Add drain valve to bottom if not included
- Start engine and check for leaks
- Verify system maintains proper crankcase ventilation
- Mark can for regular emptying schedule
Notes
The catch can should be checked and emptied regularly, especially initially to determine accumulation rate. In cold climates, consider insulating the can to prevent moisture freezing. Some systems may need a vacuum source connection to function properly.
