Task Description
Replace worn or seized choke cable to ensure proper cold starting capability. Includes routing, adjustment, and testing of the new cable.
Parts Required
- Choke cable (correct length)
- Cable clamps
- Lubricant (cable lube)
- Mounting hardware if needed
Tools Needed
- Screwdrivers
- Spanners
- Pliers
- Drill (if new mounting needed)
- Cable lubricator tool (optional)
Procedure
- Document current cable routing with photos
- Remove old choke knob from dashboard
- Disconnect cable at carburetor end
- Remove cable clamps along route
- Extract old cable completely
- Compare new cable length with old
- Lubricate inner cable before installation
- Feed new cable through dashboard hole
- Route following original path
- Secure with clamps (avoid sharp bends)
- Connect cable to carburetor choke lever
- Install choke knob on dashboard
- Adjust cable for proper operation:
- Choke fully closed when pulled
- Choke fully open when pushed in
- Test operation with engine cold
- Verify choke opens as engine warms
Notes
The choke cable should operate smoothly without binding. Route it away from heat sources and moving parts. Some aftermarket cables may need length adjustment.
