Task Description

Remove windscreen washer jets and associated hardware, then weld up the holes left behind for a cleaner appearance. Includes finishing work to make repairs invisible.

Parts Required

  • Welding wire/rod
  • Body filler
  • Primer
  • Matching paint
  • Sandpaper (various grits)
  • Masking tape

Tools Needed

  • Welder (MIG or TIG)
  • Angle grinder with cutting disc
  • Grinding disc
  • Sanding block
  • Body filler tools
  • Paint spray gun or aerosols
  • Wire brush
  • Drill (to clean holes if needed)

Procedure

  1. Remove washer jets from mounting locations
  2. Disconnect and remove washer tubing
  3. Remove washer bottle and pump if desired
  4. Clean area around holes thoroughly
  5. Remove paint and rust around holes
  6. If holes are large, cut small patches from sheet metal
  7. Weld holes closed (or weld in patches)
  8. Grind welds flush with surrounding metal
  9. Apply thin coat of body filler if needed
  10. Sand smooth progressing through grits (80-320)
  11. Clean and degrease area
  12. Apply primer to repair areas
  13. Sand primer smooth
  14. Apply matching paint in thin coats
  15. Blend paint into surrounding area
  16. Polish if needed for matching finish

Notes

This is primarily a cosmetic modification. If you might want washers in future, consider keeping the system and just capping the jets instead. Small holes can often be welded closed without patches.
