Task Description

Relocate fuel pump to a more accessible or cooler location for improved reliability and easier maintenance access. May involve converting from mechanical to electric pump.

Parts Required

  • Electric fuel pump (if converting from mechanical)
  • Fuel pump mounting bracket
  • Fuel hose (appropriate length)
  • Fuel hose clamps
  • Inline fuel filter
  • Electrical wire and connectors (if electric)
  • Relay and fuse (if electric)
  • Blanking plate for old pump location (if mechanical)

Tools Needed

  • Drill and bits
  • Socket set
  • Wire strippers and crimpers (if electric)
  • Hose cutter
  • Multimeter
  • Mounting hardware

Procedure

  1. Depressurize fuel system
  2. Identify new pump location (consider gravity feed, heat, access)
  3. Fabricate or install mounting bracket
  4. If converting to electric:
    • Install relay triggered by ignition
    • Run fused power supply to pump location
    • Install pump with proper grounding
  5. If relocating mechanical:
    • Ensure new location works with pump arm
    • Check clearances for pump lever operation
  6. Route new fuel lines to pump location
  7. Install inline filter near pump
  8. Connect fuel lines with proper clamps
  9. If mechanical pump removed, install blanking plate
  10. Prime system and check for leaks
  11. Start engine and verify fuel pressure
  12. Test drive and monitor performance

Notes

Electric pumps should be mounted as low as possible, ideally below tank level. Include a safety cutoff switch or relay that stops pump when engine stops. Consider pump flow rate matches carburetor requirements.
