Task Description
Replace worn steering arms to restore proper steering geometry and eliminate play in the steering system. Critical for safe operation and proper handling.
Parts Required
- Left and right steering arms
- New ball joints (if not included with arms)
- Castle nuts and split pins
- Thread locker
- Grease for joints
Tools Needed
- Ball joint separator/pickle fork
- Socket set
- Torque wrench
- Wire brush
- Grease gun
- Hammer
Procedure
- Safely jack up front of vehicle and support on stands
- Remove front wheels for access
- Document current steering arm positions with photos
- Loosen castle nuts on ball joints
- Use ball joint separator to break taper fit
- Remove old steering arms
- Clean mounting surfaces thoroughly
- Install new steering arms
- Torque castle nuts to specification
- Install new split pins
- Grease all joints
- Reinstall wheels
- Check and adjust toe-in settings
- Test drive and verify steering feel
