Fit New Serpentine Belts

Vehicle: 1970 Steyr-Puch Haflinger

Status: Complete

Priority: Medium

Estimated Time: 2 hours

Estimated Cost: $65

Category: Engine

Task Description

Replace worn drive belts to ensure proper operation of alternator and cooling fan, preventing potential breakdowns and overheating issues.

Parts Required

  • Fan belt(s) - check manual for correct size
  • Alternator belt (if separate)
  • Belt dressing spray (optional)

Tools Needed

  • Socket set
  • Wrenches
  • Pry bar (for tensioning)
  • Belt tension gauge (optional)
  • Ruler or straight edge

Procedure

  1. Allow engine to cool completely
  2. Document current belt routing with photos
  3. Loosen alternator mounting bolts
  4. Push alternator toward engine to create slack
  5. Remove old belt(s)
  6. Inspect pulleys for wear or damage
  7. Clean pulley grooves of debris
  8. Install new belt following documented routing
  9. Pull alternator outward to tension belt
  10. Check belt tension (typically 10-15mm deflection with moderate thumb pressure)
  11. Tighten alternator mounting bolts
  12. Rotate engine by hand to ensure belt tracks properly
  13. Start engine and verify proper operation
  14. Re-check tension after 50km of driving

Notes

The Haflinger uses a relatively simple belt system. Proper tension is critical - too loose causes slipping and reduced charging, too tight causes premature bearing wear.
