Task Description
Replace worn drive belts to ensure proper operation of alternator and cooling fan, preventing potential breakdowns and overheating issues.
Parts Required
- Fan belt(s) - check manual for correct size
- Alternator belt (if separate)
- Belt dressing spray (optional)
Tools Needed
- Socket set
- Wrenches
- Pry bar (for tensioning)
- Belt tension gauge (optional)
- Ruler or straight edge
Procedure
- Allow engine to cool completely
- Document current belt routing with photos
- Loosen alternator mounting bolts
- Push alternator toward engine to create slack
- Remove old belt(s)
- Inspect pulleys for wear or damage
- Clean pulley grooves of debris
- Install new belt following documented routing
- Pull alternator outward to tension belt
- Check belt tension (typically 10-15mm deflection with moderate thumb pressure)
- Tighten alternator mounting bolts
- Rotate engine by hand to ensure belt tracks properly
- Start engine and verify proper operation
- Re-check tension after 50km of driving
Notes
The Haflinger uses a relatively simple belt system. Proper tension is critical - too loose causes slipping and reduced charging, too tight causes premature bearing wear.
Belt Specifications
- Length: [To be confirmed from manual]
- Width: [To be confirmed from manual]
