Task Description

Perform complete oil change service including replacement of oil filter to maintain engine health and longevity.

Parts Required

  • Engine oil (check manual for grade and capacity - typically 3.5 liters)
  • Oil filter (spin-on or cartridge type depending on model)
  • Drain plug washer/gasket
  • Shop rags
  • Oil absorbent material

Tools Needed

  • Oil filter wrench
  • Drain pan (5+ liter capacity)
  • Socket set
  • Funnel
  • Oil disposal container

Procedure

  1. Warm engine to operating temperature (2-3 minutes)
  2. Position drain pan under oil pan
  3. Remove oil filler cap to aid drainage
  4. Remove drain plug and allow complete drainage (15-20 minutes)
  5. Remove old oil filter (note: will contain oil)
  6. Clean filter mounting surface
  7. Apply thin film of new oil to new filter gasket
  8. Install new filter (hand tight plus 3/4 turn)
  9. Replace drain plug with new washer
  10. Add new oil through filler (check capacity in manual)
  11. Start engine and check for leaks
  12. Check oil pressure warning light goes out
  13. Stop engine, wait 5 minutes, check level
  14. Top up if necessary between min/max marks

Notes

The Haflinger’s air-cooled engine requires quality oil for proper cooling. Consider using a high-quality synthetic or semi-synthetic oil suitable for air-cooled engines.
