Task Description

Complete ignition system service including replacement of spark plugs, distributor cap, points, and high-tension leads to restore optimal engine performance.

Parts Required

  • Spark plugs (2x) - Check manual for correct heat range
  • Distributor cap
  • Points and condenser set
  • High-tension leads set
  • Rotor arm
  • Contact cleaner
  • Dielectric grease

Tools Needed

  • Spark plug socket
  • Feeler gauges
  • Screwdrivers
  • Timing light
  • Dwell meter (optional)

Procedure

  1. Remove engine cover for access
  2. Mark and photograph lead positions on distributor cap
  3. Remove old spark plug leads
  4. Remove and inspect old spark plugs
  5. Gap new spark plugs to specification (typically 0.7-0.8mm)
  6. Install new spark plugs, torque to spec
  7. Remove distributor cap and rotor
  8. Replace points and condenser
  9. Set point gap with feeler gauge (typically 0.4mm)
  10. Install new rotor and distributor cap
  11. Connect new HT leads in correct firing order
  12. Start engine and check/adjust timing
  13. Test drive and verify smooth running

Notes

The Haflinger uses a boxer twin engine with specific firing order. Ensure leads are connected correctly to avoid engine damage.
